Just four years after first representing his country, Jayden Sawyer became one of the world’s greatest ever javelin athletes.
He did this with a monster 52.96m throw at the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in London, setting a new world record in the men’s javelin F38 to win his first world crown.
It was an incredible – albeit unexpected – result for the Canberra local, whose only other major international medal had come on debut at the 2013 World Championships – bronze in the men’s javelin F37/38.
He secured second at the 2019 Australian Athletics Championships in April, and at the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai, he finished in fifth position with a top throw of 49.42m.
At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, Jayden competed in the men’s javelin (F38) event, finishing in seventh with a top throw of 45.57m.
Off the field, Jayden holds a Certificate III in Hospitality. It is sure to come in handy, too – at just 26, Jayden has more than a few years’ competing left in him yet, but harbours dreams of opening a café in the next decade or so.
