Two of Australia’s young stars of the pool each won a silver medal on Day 3 of the Para Swimming World Championships in events in which they hadn’t previously achieved a place on the podium.

Katja Dedekind, 21, came second in the Women’s 100m Freestyle S13 in a time of 59.54s. Dedekind is a three-time Paralympic bronze medallist and won three medals at last year’s World Championships including gold in the 50 metres Freestyle.

“The 100 free is an every-other-year event for me, kind of like a cobweb swim, because the next three or four days are my main events back-to-back,” Dedekind said.

Earlier, Tim Hodge, 22, backed up his gold in the 200m Individual Medley SM9 the previous day with silver in the Men’s 100m Butterfly S9 in a time of 59.74s.

Hodge is a multiple medallist at Paralympic, world championship and Commonwealth Games, but this was his first medal result in the butterfly.

“Getting under that minute mark for a second time this year is really good,” Hodge said. “Hopefully there are big things to come.”

Hodge beat home Dolphins stalwart Brenden Hall, who finished seventh in his first race of the event.
