Grant moved to Adelaide after finishing high school and started working in a bike shop, extending his riding experience to mountain bikes. He travelled overseas to work with bike brands shooting parts for mountain bike films and competing in events such as the Red Bull Rampage in the Utah desert.
In 2011 Grant was preparing to head back to Red Bull Rampage. While out riding, he overshot a large jump and crashed, suffering a spinal cord injury. After five weeks in rehab, he says he got “back to normal life, albeit as a wheelchair user”. Good friends from the bicycle company, Trek immediately set about getting him a hand cycle to ride on the road and Grant’s career as a Para-cyclist soon took off.
Making his Games debut at Tokyo 2020, Grant kicked off his campaign in the men’s road time trial H4 event, finishing in sixth. In the six lap men’s road race H4, he battled wet conditions at the Fuji International Speedway to cross the line with a time of 2:33.31 to finish in sixth position.
Away from cycling, Grant is a dad to two wonderful kids, Jack and Ruby. In his spare time, he likes to paint, draw and make things in the shed at home. He also enjoys riding an electric mountain bike and skateboard.
