If ever there was an overachiever, Marek Steiner is it.
He studied a Bachelor of Civil Engineering at the University of Sydney, which he completed in 1993, and followed it a decade later with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery.
All this, and Marek is also a competitive Para-archer, on track to make his Paralympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
Born in Wollongong, and raised in Shellharbour and Poland, Marek was 20 when he received a shock diagnosis – bone cancer. His leg was amputated above the knee, which immediately qualified him for Paralympic sport, but nearly 30 years passed before he discovered Para-archery.
On his way to work, Marek would see athletes training at the local archery club. One Saturday, he stopped.
104 Saturdays later, Marek made his international debut at the 2015 World Archery Para Championships in Donaueschingen, Germany. It remains one of the highlights of his career, together with only just missing a place on the Australian Team for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, and winning a national title in 2019.
Off the field and outside the office, Marek’s hobbies include Para-alpine skiing and Para-swimming.
