Paralympics Australia has welcomed the announcement of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games sports schedule, which will feature the largest Para-sport medal program in Games history.
The program includes 47 medals awarded across six Para-sports, continuing the Commonwealth Games Federation’s commitment to inclusion and innovation.
The Para-cycling program will double in size from Birmingham 2022, with eight medal events, while Para-athletics will, for the first time, feature events across track, jumping and throwing disciplines.
The six Para-sports included in Glasgow 2026 are 3×3 wheelchair basketball, Para-athletics, Para-swimming, Para-cycling (track), Para-powerlifting and Para-bowls.
Paralympics Australia Chief Executive Cameron Murray said he was excited by the potential for this expanded program to inspire Para-athletes.
“The Commonwealth Games have long been a leader in integrating Para-sport and Glasgow 2026 is set to take this to another level,” Murray said.
“The record number of medals on offer and the expansion of events in sports like Para-cycling and Para-athletics demonstrate a powerful commitment to inclusion and sporting excellence.
“Paralympics Australia enjoys a strong partnership with Commonwealth Games Australia, and together with our broader high performance system partners, we are committed to preparing a highly successful Australian team for Glasgow 2026. The inclusion of such a strong Para-sport program reinforces our collective ambition to deliver outstanding performances on the international stage.
Murray said the inclusion of powerlifting events was particularly pleasing for Paralympics Australia.
“As the organisation responsible for overseeing the powerlifting’s high performance program in Australia, we are thrilled that our elite athletes will have this opportunity to showcase their strength, skill and dedication on the Commonwealth stage.
“This is a fantastic platform to further grow our sport and inspire new athletes to enter the pathway and reach their potential.”
Commonwealth Games Australia aims to send more than 270 able-bodied and Para-athletes to Glasgow 2026 to contest more than 200 medal events, aspiring to be the number one nation in terms of gold medals won, overall medals won, medallists and the number of sports winning medals at the Games.
