To anyone who kept track of her progress, it was nothing unusual to see Lauren Parker cross the line first in a Para-triathlon race.
But the four-time women’s PTWC world champion arrived in Paris hellbent on winning the one title that had so far eluded her: Paralympic gold.
Further fuelling Parker’s desire was the nasty way she missed out at Tokyo 2020, pipped for gold by 0.01s – literally just before the line – by her American rival Kendall Gretsch.
At Paris 2024, nothing would stop Parker from turning the tables. The unflappable Australian raced away to beat Gretsch, with Canada’s Leanne Taylor taking bronze.
“It feels absolutely amazing,” she said afterwards. “I can’t believe I was able to do it today.
“It’s been a long journey to get here. I couldn’t be more proud and happy to get the gold medal.
“After getting second in Tokyo by less than a second, that’s been a big driving force over the last three years – every single day through every single training session. I’ve worked so hard to accomplish what I’ve done today.
“I’ve said ever since Tokyo that I want to get gold at Paris and that I will get gold at Paris. I put a lot of pressure on myself.”
The pressure wasn’t over yet though. Parker still had two cycling events to come later in the Games.
