Korey Boddington is an accountant and former motocross rider, who goes by the nickname ‘the flying burrito’ because of his preference for a good stuffed tortilla.
But, by the second day of Paris 2024, he was known for something else; becoming a Paralympic Games gold medallist.
The debutant cyclist blitzed his ride in qualifying in the men’s 1000 metres time trial C4-5 event, jagging a Games record 1:02.021 before clocking 1:02.487 in the final to win gold.
Boddington said there were many people who shared in his success.
“I just had a delusional thought once upon a time and then they believed in me and we made it reality,” he said.
“As long as I gave it 100 percent it didn’t matter what I did, I knew it would be a PB and then I was pretty confident it would give me the result I wanted.
“I think I might have left my shadow behind out of the gate. We were zoomin’.”
From there, Boddington said he sat at the front of the seat and, “like a sniffer dog”, kept his head down and pedalled as hard as he could.
“I’m pretty patriotic,” he said. “I’m pretty happy to be Aussie. I’m through and through green and gold.”
Hearing the anthem and sharing with everyone in the stands, he said, was “probably the coolest moment of my life”.
