The guaranteed inclusion of Para-sport events on the revised Commonwealth Games program for Glasgow 2026 has been welcomed by Paralympics Australia.
The proposed 10-sport program is certain to include athletics and swimming, both of which will feature events for classified Para-athletes. Of the other eight sports likely to be included on the program, it is understood at least half will include Para-sport components.
“It is very important that athletes with an impairment across Australia and the Commonwealth can aspire to reach the Commonwealth Games and gain the valuable experience of competing in a major multi-sport event,” Paralympics Australia President Alison Creagh said.
“The scale of the Commonwealth Games has lent itself to being a very successful integrated sporting event, showcasing the elite nature of Para-sport and the power of sport to drive inclusion and diversity.
“Integration has been a feature of the Commonwealth Games for over 20 years, dating back to Manchester 2002. At the most recent Games, Birmingham 2022, 74 Australian Para-athletes competed and many of them went on to represent Australia at the Paris Paralympic Games.”
Ms Creagh congratulated Commonwealth Games Australia for its role in securing support for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
Commonwealth Games Australia President Ben Houston said: “The Commonwealth Games pride themselves on inclusion, and we know that Para-sport will again feature extensively alongside able-bodied opportunities at Glasgow 2026.
“On the back of Paris 2024 and outstanding performances by Australia’s Paralympians, we look forward to welcoming them to our Australian Commonwealth Games Team.”
