Some of the heroes of Australia’s memorable charge at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games will celebrate with Olympic peers, dignitaries and members of the South East Queensland community at a special event this weekend to mark 10 years until the start of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Australian Paralympic Team members including Tokyo 2020 gold medal-winning cyclist Paige Greco and swimmers Rowan Crothers and Rachael Watson will be joined other Paralympic medallists including Alistair Donohoe (cycling), Tom Gallagher (swimming), AJ Jennings (canoe) and Jake Michel (swimming).

The event, ‘10-Year Green and Gold Celebration to Brisbane 2032’, will be at Riverside Green and the South Bank Piazza in South Brisbane on Saturday, July 23, from 12-4pm.

There will be 14 Paralympic and Olympic sports for attendees to experience across the venues, including Paralympic favourite wheelchair rugby. Other sports on show will be cycling, badminton, table tennis, judo, shooting, football, rugby, breaking, volleyball, tennis, fencing, hockey, BMX freestyle and handball.

There will be performances by the Aboriginal Centre for Performing Arts and musicians Travis Lee and Emma Tomlinson, and welcome speeches by Federal Minister for Sport Anika Wells, Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, Australian Olympic Committee Chief Executive Matt Carroll and Paralympics Australia Chief Executive Catherine Clark.

“The next decade is going to be a momentous time in Australia’s sporting story, on and off the field,” Clark said.

“At Paralympics Australia we see it as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to genuinely change perceptions on behalf of the 20 percent of Australians who live with a disability, substantially increase participation in sport among people who have an impairment and continue to inspire ever-growing numbers of Aussies through the awesome efforts and achievements of our elite Para-athletes.

“The 10-Year Green and Gold Celebration in Brisbane on Saturday is really a fitting way to get things started, with plenty of sport, music, culture, colour and excitement. It’s a great chance for people to meet some of our Paralympic stars, get involved and be part of the movement towards the Brisbane Games.”

The event is being presented by the Australian and Queensland Governments, Brisbane City Council, the Australian Olympic Committee and Paralympics Australia.
