The youngest member of the entire Australian Paralympic Team, Adelaide’s Isabella Vincent, will make her Games debut on day three when she features in the Women’s 200m Individual Medley (SM7).
This marks the first of four events for the young gun who will also line up on the blocks with fellow Aussie, Tiffany Thomas Kane (SM7). With the pair heading into the race with a top ten ranking (Thomas Kane sitting fourth and Vincent eighth), making the final would be a goal and terrific result for both athletes.
Another South Aussie making their first appearance in Tokyo on Friday is Jesse Aungles, who will compete in the Men’s 100m Backstroke (S8). After making the final and finishing seventh in Rio, Aungles has gone from strength to strength, achieving a silver medal in this race at the World Championships in 2019. Currently holding the third fastest time this year, the 26-year-old will have tough competition from the USA and Spain.
Australia has two strong contenders in the Men’s 200m Freestyle (S14), with Australian Record holder Liam Schluter and Ricky Betar set to battle it out with their international counterparts. Posting a time of 1:54.46 in his pet event at Trials in Adelaide, Schluter recorded a new national record, while Betar also clocked an impressive time and a new personal best of 1:55.53. The last time the pair raced this event at an international meet – the 2019 World Championships – they both made the final. Let’s hope the green and gold caps will shine again!
