Paralympics Australia is aware of a media report published today in which it is claimed the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will be cancelled.
The report quotes an unnamed source referred to as a Japanese Government “senior member of the ruling coalition”.
The Japanese Government and the International Olympic Committee only this week publicly affirmed their commitment to deliver a safe Olympic and Paralympic Games from July.
In light of this official position, Paralympics Australia continues to work closely with the Australian Government, the Australian Institute of Sport, National Sport Organisations and our other partners to consider the best medical advice and deliver an Australian Paralympic Team campaign with the safety of every athlete and staff member as our number one priority. That has never stopped and won’t until after our scheduled return from Tokyo in September 2021.
We remain hopeful that the Games can be delivered in a COVID-safe environment and we have faith in the Japanese Government, the IOC and the IPC to continue to work towards the commitments they have made.
