Ella Sabljak will join Alhassan Sedky (EGY), Erica Gavel (CAN) and Carina de Rooij (NED) as the inaugural members of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation’s (IWBF) Athlete Steering Committee.
The aim of the Athlete Steering Committee will be to guide the IWBF’s Commission for Legal Matters and Eligibility (CLME), particularly in helping to establish an Athlete’s Commission.
Sabljak, who made her senior debut for the Gliders at the 2018 World Championships, said:
“It feels a little bit overwhelming, as we’re the first group to be doing this, so we’re all figuring things out as we go along,” Sabljak said. “But I’m also extremely excited to be a part of this group alongside Hassan, Erica and Carina, who are all well respected in the wheelchair basketball community.
“I hope that we can pave the way for athletes to feel as though our voices are heard and respected.”
Ulf Mehrens, President of the IWBF, said:
“We are delighted to have four highly qualified and knowledgeable athletes who are willing to give up their own time in order to help shape the future of the Athlete’s Commission, and make our sport and events even better.
“As well as representing different countries and cultures, they bring understanding from a diverse range of backgrounds. We are really proud to be making this historic milestone in the sport, and look forward to working with them.”
